Our goal is to be a student-led community enhancing the experience of our fellow students.

As a student-led organization, we are committed to improving the #SheridanLife for all students through student focused services, programs, events and advocacy. Here’s a look at how we did last year and where we are headed in the coming months:

 
 

Services

Helped over 400 students through our on-campus Food First program.

Hosted over 20 Perk Partners from our community on campus who gave exclusive discounts to Sheridan students.

Highlights:

  • Hosted our first Perk Peep Tradeshow to showcase our Perk Partners on campus and provide additional discounts to our student community. 

  • Hosted a LinkedIn Photo session for free, with our grad photo partners, Lassman Studios!

So far this year, we’ve:

  • Successfully moved our Services virtual while continuing to provide the best possible student experience.

  • Set up our CSRs to work from home while answering student emails and connecting face to face with students on video calls.

  • Hosted multiple virtual info sessions highlighting our services such as our Health and Dental Insurance, Empower Me and Legal Supports with our lawyer Bill Reid.

  • Transitioned our Food First program to a virtual platform, providing electronic grocery cards to hundreds of students in need.

  • Introduced a tiered program with our Perk Peep Partners, where the discount offered to students is matched with the amount of promotion they are provided by the SSU, allowing us to give students more quality Perk Peeps. 

In the coming months, we will:

  • Continue to host our Legal Series with Bill Reid, touching on aspects of the law most relevant to our Sheridan community.

  • Raise awareness of the new Empower Me App that offers students alternative methods of communicating with counsellors (Text, Instant Message).

  • Working with Perk Partners to offer students affordable internet services and discounts on computers, both very necessary for the virtual learning environment.

So far this year, we’ve:

  • Transitioned to a virtual clubs model to assist clubs with virtual meetings, events and initiatives. 

  • Improved our club policies to allow us to support more students and clubs than ever during this virtual year through extended marketing and event support. 

  • Launched a brand new Clubs Corner website for clubs in October 2020 to better support and allow all clubs to connect with the Sheridan community to gain membership, showcase events and promote their initiatives. 

  • Engaged with over 600 Sheridan students on the new Clubs Corner site since the launch on October 14th.   

  • Successfully hosted our first virtual Clubs Fair through the Clubs Corner website with almost 300 students attending virtually. 

  • Successfully assisted 11 brand new clubs in starting up since August, with 46 clubs total being ratified this year so far. 

In the coming months, we will:

  • Continue to improve and build on our virtual supports for clubs and work with all clubs to ensure successful virtual events and initiatives happen throughout this year. 

  • Continue building out the new Clubs Corner software to offer more virtual benefits for clubs. 

  • Work to improve club space on campus at all three campuses for when we return. 

We’ve launched a new platform for clubs to connect at Sheridan!

The new and improved Clubs Corner helps students:

  • Easily connect with other members of the Sheridan community in a virtual environment.

  • Find opportunities to join a student-led club at Sheridan related to your interests or academic program.

  • Easily register your own club if you don't find one that interests you.

  • Find information on and join events that are run by student-led Clubs & Organizations.

  • Stay up to date on ways to get involved and expand your SheridanLife, even while studying virtually.

 
 

Events

Families attended our annual Holiday Party for students with children!

Pop-up engagements were planned and successfully executed to engage students by your Student Life Coordinators.

So far this year, we’ve:

  • Creatively transitioned all in-person events to virtual events and had great online engagement!

  • Attracted over 1000 students for the Live Concert in May and Kick-Off Concert in September  

  • Over 1,000 students involved in virtual events over the course of the first semester!

In the coming months, we will:

  • Continue to plan and organize more engaging online events such as art nights, game nights, collaborative college events, and awareness campaigns that focus on improving student life virtually.

  • This year, we are focused on four major programming and awareness themes for the year:

    • Inclusivity: Diversity, Culture, Equality  

    • Wellness: Focus on all 8 dimensions of wellness.

    • Safe Space: Community Building

    • Accessibility: Creating events that all students can enjoy.

 
 

Food Services & Operations

Pounds of coffee served at The Bruin Coffee House (Davis) and The Coffee Loft (TRC).

Pounds of cheese served! Because apparently at Sheridan, we love cheese on everything.

 
 
 

Highlights:

  • Opened new Booster Juice location @ TRC 

  • Opened INS Convenience Store @ Davis  

  • Strong daytime sales growth @ The Den (increased food sales especially!) 

  • Ongoing progress on our new Student Centre at the HMC campus (opening Fall 2021) 

  • Launched new management structure @ TRC & Davis; creating entry-level management positions for staff who have recently graduated.

  • Donated about a dozen carloads of food and beverage to residence and local food bank programs to deal with expiring stock due to our closures.

So far this year, we’ve:

  • Been working with the President and our Board of Directors on evolving our food service model to better adapt to our new reality including a new pub service model, catering, quick-service outlets, etc.

In the coming months, we will:

  • Have new honey bee hives at our Davis and Trafalgar campuses! 

  • Launch our new food service models at all 3 campuses (Fall 2021) 

    • This includes food services at our new Student Centre at HMC!

 
 

Human Resources

Highlights:

  • Employed over 255 part time student staff, making us the number one employer of students on campus throughout the year!

  • Working with the Marketing team to make our training more streamlined and accessible online. Our new virtual training model presents the essential tools and information to prepare new and rehired employees. 

  • To protect employees’ privacy, HR worked with Sheridan IT to register selected SSU staff on the Jabber software. Cisco Jabber is a collaboration application that provides presence, instant messaging, voice, voice messaging, and video calling.

  • Working with third-party consulting to develop a comprehensive Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, updating thessu.ca website to ensure AA standards for accessible communications.

So far this year, we’ve:

  • Kept student safety and employment a top priority despite closures, now employing over 62 staff including our Board of Directors.

  • Created a Pandemic – Work from Home Policy to ensure our staff have the policies, procedures and supports they need during this time.

  • Despite the pandemic, SSU created a new student position, introducing one Digital Community Coordinator at each campus.
