2021-2022: Welcome back to your #SheridanLife!

We’re looking back at last year and how we’re supporting Sheridan students! Here are a few highlights:

We opened a brand new Student Centre at HMC! Developed in partnership between the Sheridan Student Union, Sheridan College, and Sheridan Athletics, this new new five-storey building features a range of amenities and athletic facilities, including student lounges, food outlets, and games areas; dedicated rooms for student groups, the Sheridan Student Union, and clubs activities; fitness rooms, and an elevated indoor running track. Now open for the Sheridan community to enjoy!

Student Spaces

Health & Dental

Our support provided through student Health & Dental coverage for all domestic students at Sheridan College continued - online and via phone.  Continued support is also provided through Empower Me – a mental health service that connects students with qualified counselors and life coaches, remains accessible 24/7 online.

This year, we also announced an upgrade to our Health and Dental Plan to include more support for Sheridan students. Learn more here.

Financial Support

We created new scholarships, awards and bursaries to support last year! With our first $250,000 financial aid donation, we created the Sheridan Student Union Scholarship, Sheridan Student Union Bursaries, Sheridan Student Union Diversity in Education Awards, and the Sheridan Student Union Proud to Be 2SLGBTQIA+ Awards to create more access to quality education, acknowledge the financial and social challenges many Sheridan student experience, and help lessen the financial burden for students. Learn more here.

Clubs

Since the launch of Clubs Corner, we have proudly supported our clubs in hosting over 130 virtual and off-campus events, activities and initiatives last year!  As we worked towards fully welcoming our clubs back to in person activities, we opened our 3 new Clubs Room spaces (one at each campus) to further support academic and social clubs and associations at Sheridan College.

Services

We re-opened our offices to be available in person to help students face-to-face and reintroduce our in-office services, such as binding, laminating, and faxing.  We continue to offer services like our Virtual Food First Program, Health and Dental Coverage well as Legal Advice, Grad Photo Bookings, while creating new programs like Dressed for Success!

Events

Our Events teams proudly planned dozens of events and initiatives throughout the year to give a warm welcome our Sheridan Community - both online and in person. From our first outdoor concert, to our our 4th Annual SheridanLife Gala - we sure had fun welcoming you all back to campus! Check out our YouTube channel for some recaps here.

Food First

What began as an on-campus Emergency Food Bank has now grown to meet the evolving needs of Sheridan students. In March of 2020, the program was adapted to serve students more flexibly, making food and necessities easily accessible to students when they need it most. Since the beginning of the pandemic, SSU’s Virtual Food First program has provided electronic grocery cards to over 2600 students!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Kyle Budge - Sheridan Student Union President

It has been a while since our last AGM, but only because we have been working so hard to create so many amazing new opportunities, experiences, services, and more for every Sheridan student. It has been a busy year for all of us at the Sheridan Student Union, and I’m sure for all of you as well, but I hope you’ve been staying in touch and checking out everything we have had to offer in the last year.

Our biggest project that we’ve been working on is our new Student Centre at HMC. More than 7 years in the making, we finally operationalized the space this past year and have been putting a lot of effort into making it the best space it can be for all our students. If you haven’t stopped by yet, you’re really missing out. There are 3 new food service outlets, an amazing atrium with lots of natural light, full-size gym facilities and a short-distance running track, and some amazing new study spaces and club facilities. Since we opened our doors to students last year, we have seen consistent, and constant, use of our facilities with more and more students stopping by every week. And if you ever need anything from the SSU, we’re very easy to locate on the third floor. Stop by and ask a question or just come in to say hello.

Our facilities at Trafalgar and Davis have gone through some refreshes as well, with our offices and atriums being the first of a multi-stage approach to providing better facilities for our students. The Den at Davis, and The Marquee at Trafalgar will be going through some major renovations in the near future to bring new life and vibrancy to our out-of-date spaces. We’ve taken feedback directly from students to help shape and guide these renovations and will keep gathering feedback and ideas to help sustain our efforts in providing spaces that match your needs. If you have any ideas for what you would like to see at your student centre, let us know. We’re always happy to gather more feedback and see what students want and need.

Over the last year, the SSU Executive team has been travelling across Ontario and Canada to meet with other student leaders and share our ideas, challenges, and resources to better understand what students need not just within our communities, but all communities. This has helped us determine what is affecting students the most, and helps to ensure that we aren’t trying to come up with all the solutions on our own. Knowing that students across the country are all facing similar issues has helped us come up with better solutions, and allows us to pool our resources and create better outcomes for our students. Working alone we could only do so much, but working together has increased our capacity for advocating for change.

So much of the work we have been doing is behind the scenes to help improve your experiences and lives in less obvious ways, but there are plenty of direct impacts from our work too. We work with individuals to ensure their grade appeals have the best chance at success, we’ve continued to provide full scholarships for two students, and have provided grants and bursaries for many more students. We’ve seen significant growth to the number of clubs we support over the last year and have even provided one club with a substantial grant to host an event that invited schools from across Ontario to participate and compete in a competition. There’s plenty of opportunities for every student to get the most out of their time at Sheridan, but if you don’t know what’s available or where to start, just let us know and we would be happy to guide you.

Our organization has been doing a lot, and you can find out more by reading through this Impact Report. It’s our way of showcasing our success and achievements throughout the year and highlighting all the amazing things that our students can get involved with, or how we can support them when they may be in need. Despite how busy this year has been, we’re continuing to work very hard to bring you even more this year and next!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Shivang Rajnibhai Shingala - Sheridan Student Union Board 2022-2021 (Davis Director)

Phew!! We are here FINALLY!! What an amazing year it has been!

Firstly, give yourselves a tap on your back, you all deserve it. The past year has been incredibly challenging and transformative period for everybody. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, everybody was forced to take drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus, resulting in widespread lockdowns, travel restrictions, and economic downturns. Many of us experienced profound hardship and loss. Despite these unprecedented challenges, the past year also saw inspiring acts of resilience, solidarity, and innovation as we came together to support one another and adapt to the new normal. However, that is all in the rear-view mirror.

We have a new year to look forward to!

Looking at the past year, it has been a busy and a productive year for all of us, as we have been striving to provide new and improved services, facilities, and opportunities to every Sheridan student. Our biggest project over the past year has been the opening of our new Student Centre at HMC. This state-of-the-art facility has been created to ensure the students get the perfect infrastructure and facilities that they deserve. In the coming year, we are looking into renovating the Davis and the TRC campus as well over the coming year.

As always, we were determined to continue providing engaging events and activities for our community. We adapted our approach and utilized virtual platforms to ensure that we could still host events that were fun, informative, and interactive. From online workshops and game nights to virtual socials and guest speaker events, we hosted a wide range of events.

Upon returning to campus, we hosted our first outdoor concert with Loud Luxury and welcomed students back to campus with a bang! Through our creativity and dedication, we were able to organize events that not only provided entertainment but also fostered a sense of community and connection during a time when it was needed the most. We are proud of our team’s efforts to adapt and innovate, and we look forward to continuing to provide engaging events and activities in the future, whether in-person or virtually.

We are proud to re-open of our facilities and services this year for students. This was a significant achievement that required careful planning and strict adherence to health and safety guidelines. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that our facilities were safe and accessible for all students, and we are happy to report that the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

All in all, we are committed to continuing our efforts to provide the best possible services and opportunities for every student at Sheridan. As you review our impact report, we hope you will see the value of work we have done and continue to do. We welcome your feedback and suggestions as we work towards making the SSU an even better organization for our students.
