We’re your Sheridan Student Union and you can say we’re pretty big advocates for your #SheridanLife!
Here are 22/23 ways we helped enhance your student experience at Sheridan College during the 2022/2023 academic year:
1 . We’re back!
With the return to on campus life, our Events and Programming department team executed over 50 in person events across all three (3) campuses including our back to campus concert!
2 . JOBS ON CAMPUS
We’re proud to be the number one employer of students on campus. The return to campus meant that we could now hire over 200 part-time Sheridan student staff within our events, student leadership and operations teams!
3 . an award winning student centre
We are proud to share that the Hazel McCallion Campus Student Centre (completed with Moriyama & Teshima Architects) has been recognized in this year’s Mississauga Urban Design Awards and has received an Award of Merit For Execution, Context, and Significance – Community Scale.
This brand new Student Centre at Sheridan College’s Hazel McCallion Campus was developed in partnership between the Sheridan Student Union, Sheridan College, and Sheridan Athletics. Construction began on the new student centre building in 2018 and we are so excited to share that this building is now open for students to enjoy!
The new five-storey building features a range of amenities and athletic facilities, including student lounges, food outlets, and games areas; dedicated rooms for student groups, the Sheridan Student Union, and clubs activities; fitness rooms, and an elevated indoor running track.
4 . DRESSED FOR SUCCESS
We proudly launched our Dressed for Success program to collect and provide business casual clothing and winter clothing for Sheridan students. The community really came together and donated over 500 pounds of clothing in the 2022-2023 academic school year!
5 . FAMILY MATTERS
Family driven engagements continue to thrive with the continued execution of our annual Family Holiday Party and Halloween Party planned for students and their children / families to celebrate together in our community! This year, we created more opportunities for family connection with the addition of Family Day Weekend getaways and Family Easter-egg hunts!
6 . SSUHUNGRY?
Did you know there are over 33 menu items available in our coffee houses and over 50 items in our Kitchens?! The Marquee, Bruin Coffee House, Station Kitchen, Station Express and The Coffee Loft are all open for business and creating new feature dishes every week.
7 . SOUP IT UP!
Each semester, our Events and Food Services teams get together to offer free soup to our community! In the 2022-2023 school year alone, we served over 500 liters of free soup. See when we’re popping up next —>
8 . SUpporting student run clubs
We officially welcomed all clubs back to campus in person and restarted up various resources to support on-campus club initiatives once more. By the end of the 22/23 academic year, we surpassed a total of 100 active SSU clubs at Sheridan across all three campuses and we supported our clubs in hosting over 180 events, activities and initiatives both on and off campus.
Our new and improved Clubs Corner helps students easily connect with other members of the Sheridan community in a virtual environment, and find opportunities to join a student-led club at Sheridan related to your interests or academic program. Whether you’re looking to register your own club or find information on existing ones, a great first step in getting involved with clubs is learning how to navigate Clubs Corner.
Your student leaders help make this happen! Connect with your student leaders or visit clubs corner to learn more.
9 . NEW CLUBS SPACES
We opened our brand new Clubs Room at the new HMC Student Centre for all clubs to book out and enjoy throughout the year for their meetings and initiatives.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new space at HMC, learn more here.
10 . student support
SSU allocated $20,000 to a new SSU initiative, the Indigenous Student Emergency Fund. This fund, dedicated exclusively to Indigenous students, aims to ease financial burdens that would otherwise impact their academic journey.
12 . committee work
How do we do that? SSU works closely with Sheridan College as well as various departments and faculties in collaborative committee work that aims to support an inclusive and empowering student experience. Here are just a few:
14 . Student leadership
Not only did we create 5 new student leaders positions, but we also increased the number of co-op positions to further support student learning and growth on campus.
13 . Accessibility
Along with our collaborative work with Sheridan’s Inclusive Communities team, we also work to ensure our spaces, events, communications and policies are accessible to all members of the community.
In the 2022-2023 school year, we concluded the work on 2023 Accessibility Compliance Report which included updating SSU Multi-Year Accessibility Plan.
See how this was implemented as part of our Strategic Plan here.
15 . JOBS, JOBS, and More JOBS!
As the number one employer of students on campus, we are proud to say that our Food & Beverage department alone employs over 100 students across 3 campuses!
16 . Tax Clinic
We reintroduced the on-campus tax clinic since the pandemic closures. As a result, many students were able to get their taxes filed successfully and for free! We were able to help 124 students get their taxes done.
18 . First AID
We provided on campus First Aid Classes so that students can get their Standard First Aid and CPR Certification!
17 . Hygeine kits
We set up to launch our hygiene kit program that includes toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and soap! Students will be able to pop by and pick up a complimentary kit once a semester.
19 . rexall clinic
Rexall joined us on campus to provide flu and covid shots to Sheridan students! Over 280 students attended our Rexall Clinics!
22 . Music to our ears
We added a piano for students to use in our Trafalgar Student Centre! If you’re ever walking over to get something from the Coffee Loft or Booster Juice, you’ll surely hear one of your fellow students showing off their skills in the atrium.
21. Gaming at the ssu
We now have a number of games and gaming tables available at the SSU. In addition to our popular ping pong tables, we have expanded to carrom boards, table soccer and more!
